Why Study Accounting?
Accountants and auditors help ensure that firms are run efficiently, public records are kept accurately, and taxes are paid properly. Accounting career options for Certified Public Accountants also include assurance services, environmental accounting, forensic accounting, international accounting, and tax and financial planning. Job opportunities for those who earn CPA credentials are favorable. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, faster than average employment growth in this field will result from an increase in the number of businesses, changing financial laws and regulations, and greater scrutiny of company finances.
Occupational Objectives:
Upon graduation, students may find employment in small businesses, large corporations, accounting firms, and governmental organizations. Additional requirements are necessary for CPA eligibility.
Opportunities at Rockland Community College:
There are several opportunities to gain practical accounting skills through extra-curricular activities on campus such as an annual Entrepreneurial Business Plan Competition with cash awards (co-hosted by the local NY State Society of Certified Public Accountants and the RCC Business Department); Rotaract, sponsored by the Rotary Club of New York City; and Alpha Beta Gamma, a business honor society established in 1970 to recognize scholarship among two-year college students.

Student Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this program, students will be able to:
Apply a comprehensive knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles
Use analysis, synthesis and evaluation skills to solve general accounting problems
Understand accounting and business terminology used in business scenarios and be proficient with commonly used office software
Perform accurately and apply fundamental accounting process to properly record and interpret business transactions resulting in the generation of financial statements

Admission to Rockland Community College is open to applicants whose academic record and qualifications suggest that they have the ability to benefit from the educational experience.Matriculated students must meet one of the following criteria:Possess a local or Regents High School Diploma (the I.E.P. and S.A.C.C. are not a recognized diplomas);Possess a high school equivalency diploma (GED) or TASC;Be admitted as an Early Admit Student;Be admitted as a GED Candidate;Possess an associates degree or higher from a nationally accredited college or university;Score appropriately on tests approved by the U.S. Department of Education.
